Section C of the girls Senior Premier League looks set for a an epic showdown in the next couple of weeks as the race for the playoffs hots up.
Saturday morning pits the unbeaten Muckross Park against Alexandra College with both looking to close the gap on top placed Mount Anville who have played a game extra. For Alex, their season has seen them beat Teresians 6-0 before tying 1-1 with Mount Anville. It was a game of few chances in the first half but burst into life in the second period when Issy Delamar started driving into midfield from defence.
Her link up play with Freya McDermott and Katherine Egan created problems and, from one of these attacks, Egan was given space in the circle to shoot and make it 1-0.
Mount Anville fought back, winning a couple of corners, one of which Katie Ronan managed to convert for 1-1. And they pushed on for a winner but found Caroline Nugent holding firm between the posts to make a good one-on-one save to share points.
In a repeat of last season’s Senior Cup semi-final, Alex then beat Loreto St Stephen’s Green 4-0. McDermott’s corner was built on by Sophie Roopnarinesingh for 2-0 at half-time though the Milltown school was consistently tested by Sarah Torrans. A couple of second half goals completed the win.
Mount Anville lead the way in the Section with three wins and that draw, the latest result of which was a 5-0 win over Teresians in midweek with Sophie Twomey scoring a hat trick with Ronan and Georgina Spillance scoring the other goals.
They also shaded a 2-1 result against Stephen’s Green, Twomey and Claudia Cotter out-doing a Torrans strike. Muckross are the side with a perfect record with wins over Teresians, Rathdown and Stephen’s Green.
In Section A, Loreto Beaufort are leading the way with perfect records on their card. Beaufort are powered by Laura Nagle, Katie Fearon and Grace McLoughlin, helping them to run up a 6-2 win over High School, a 2-1 success against Holy Child, Killiney and 4-0 against Mount Sackville.
Next on their agenda is a game with St Kilian’s on Saturday morning. A solid Wesley team have yet to concede in three outings, recording a 0-0 draw against High School and 4-0 wins over Kilian’s and Mount Sackville.
Holy Child will look to upset the apple-cart following two wins from three thus far, most recently beating Kilian’s 2-0 when they were pushed all the way by the Clonskea school for whom Nina Heisterkamp and goalkeeper Elizabeth Murphy have been key players.
Section B is all to play for, too, with St Andrew’s and St Gerard’s are in a big tussle – the two sides drew 1-1 already. The Booterstown outfit count Sally Campbell, Kate Orr, Sophie Carr and Jessica Meates among their key players and they have wins over King’s Hospital (3-1) and Newbridge (5-0) under their belt.
Loreto Foxrock have three wins from three and sit on nine points at the head of the table. They saw off Newbridge 5-0, Kings Hos 2-0 and Loreto Dalkey 2-1.
