Ireland were three up at half-time with goals from Zoe Wilson, Zara Malseed and Ellie Noone. Wilson got the first inside four minutes after relentless early pressure gave the side the perfect start.

Jessica McMaster went close to doubling the lead before Malseed shot home a rocket for the third, picking up a knock in the process. It gave them a big lead at the interval but Italy fought back in the second half.

Federica Carta got one back from a corner and they applied more pressure but Ireland went on to win and book a place in the final at 6.45pm (local time) on Saturday July, 11.

This victory ensures Ireland go back to the top flight of European Hockey and tomorrow the match against Poland will be for a gold medal.
