Five-star Town jump big division two hurdle

Men’s Leinster Division Two
Monkstown II got over probably the highest of their remaining hurdles to look clear favourites for the Leinster men’s division two title after they beat Pembroke II.

They sit four points off the pace set by Clontarf but will anticipate full points from their four matches – with three in hand over the Bulls – against sides in the bottom half of the table.

Michael Styles’ side got off to a flying start when Wilf King stole the ball and fed David Watkins to score in the third minute. Scott Furlong levelled from a corner but Andy Ewington restored the lead when he raced forward from his own turnover and slotted home.

Iain Styles made it 3-1 before Rory Nichols and Doug Good exchanged goals to make it 4-2 at half-time. Scott Sullivan closed the gap to one once more but the game was done and dusted when King won a stroke that David Nolan converted for a 5-3 2 win.

Title rivals Clontarf and Three Rock both had emphatic wins to keep up what pressure they can. The Bulls thumped Kilkenny 9-2 with Kevin Mullins scoring a hat trick while Rovers beat Railway Union 8-2, Eoin Buttanshaw the treble scorer for them.

YMCA II drew 2-2 with Fingal in the other tie of the round.

Results: Three Rock Rovers 8 (E Buttanshaw 3, C Empey 2, J Walker, S Grace, B Epstein) Railway Union 2 (P Yates, S Ouchida); YMCA 2 Fingal 2; Monkstown 5 (D Watkins, A Ewington, I Styles, R Nichols, D Nolan) Pembroke 3 (S Furlong, S Sullivan, D Good); Kilkenny 2 Clontarf 9 (K Mullins 3, R Forrest 2, L Hayden 2, T Noonan, J Mullins)
