Leinster Schoolgirls Senior One final
Loreto on the Green 1 (S Dolan) Newpark 0
Sophie Dolan’s persistence 12 minutes from time saw Loreto on the Green take home the Leinster Schoolgirls Senior One title at Grange Road, getting the better of Newpark in front of a raucous crowd.
They were good value for the win – the third time they have shaded a win over Newpark this season after two earlier 3-2 results – but could not convert any of their eight penalty corners to make it a more comfortable affair.
Four of those were won in the opening ten minutes with Sarah Torrans the stand-out player, her silky skills causing havoc. Winning a fifth, though, she unfortunately sustained a nasty injury that ended her involvement in the tie after 25 minutes.
Loreto, though, still were the side forcing the issue with Katie Conaty flashing two sides just wide of the target, one a rasping first time effort that could have ripped the netting had it been on target.
Defensively, Anna Richardson and Kate Whelan were putting in huge stints while Jess Whelan got in a brilliant last ditch tackle to deny Conaty as she wound up to shoot.
Loreto continued to push forward in the second half, winning three more corners and they got their break with 12 minutes to go when Dolan bust through two tackles before eventually unleashing a powerful shot.
Esme Galloway kept a single goal in it with a top save at the death but Loreto got over the line to end a great season – that saw them also reach a Senior Cup semi-final – in style.
