Ton-up for Abbott as Railway stay on track

Men’s Leinster Division One
UCD 2 (S O’Malley, S Madeley) Railway Union 6 (R Abbott 4, M English, J Spillane)

Rob Abbott’s four goal salvo brought his tally to 100 goals for Railway Union since making the switch from Clontarf, making sure the Park Avenue side had no slips against UCD in their IHL push.

Abbott’s first three had Railway 3-0 up but goals from Sean O’Malley and Shane Madeley reduced the deficit to 3-2 early in the second half. Abbott’s fourth, though, killed off the comeback before Mark English and Jeffrey Spillane – either side of a George Dagg red card – stretched out the lead to a more comfortable level.

The result means Railway and YMCA are on course for an IHL eliminator of sorts on Saturday. If Three Rock Rovers win against UCD, it means that the loser of the Railway-YM game is out of the IHL running while a draw would eliminate both clubs from the reckoning.
