St Andrew’s came back from two goals down to earn a draw with Alexandra College, a result that sets up a three-way playoff with Muckross Park for the last available Premier League semi-final berth.
Mount Anville, though, leap-frogged all three sides earlier today as they ran up a 4-0 win over Mount Sackville with Claudia Cotter netting twice while Georgina Spillane and Sophie Twomey were also on the mark.It saw them end the regular season on 15 points, two clear of the next sides all equal on 13 points.
Alex and Andrew’s tie started off an extremely high tempo. There was a massive “Old Alex” battle in midfield with Freya McDermott and Katherine Egan against Sally Campbell – the three goalscorers in the Milltown club’s win over UCD last weekend – while Sophie Roopnirinesingh also put in massive work helping out the midfield defensively.
After 10 minutes, Louise McCollum, who had been causing problems with her pace from right mid, took a free quickly in the 25 and fed it to the back post for Ava Beatty to score Alex’s first.
It was pretty even from there with Alex maybe having a couple more chances than Andrews but nothing of major note. But a minute into the second half, McDermott scored with a brilliant penalty corner strike.
But any semblance of control was taken away from them in the closing phases as St Andrew’s piled forward and grabbed two goals to tie things up and earning two points for the score draw.
The result means the sides will playoff in January in a three-way playoff akin to last season. One side will be drawn to go straight into the playoff final with the other two sides playing a match to join them there.
The two sides who miss out will go into the Claudia Tierney Cup semi-finals, a competition which Rathdown and Loreto Beaufort will also playoff to qualify for.
Senior One side Newpark caused a shock in the Senior Cup first round, meanwhile, as they won 2-0 in a shoot-out against King’s Hospital after normal time ended scoreless.
