Ulster are in the box seat after day one of the schoolboys interprovincial championships at Grange Road following opening day wins over Leinster at both U-18 and U-16 level.
The day had started well for the blues with the U-16s beating Munster 5-2 in the first game of the competition, racing into a 3-0 lead and maintaining that advantage by virtue of Guy Sarratt’s hat trick. The U-18s followed up with some real character to come from behind three times to eventually beat the southern province 4-3. Julian Dale had twice given Munster the lead as had Matthew Lee but Leinster eventually fought back in a rip-roaring second half to nick the win late on.
Leinster were unable to continue the momentum into their second games of the day against a fresher Ulster side, however, as the northern province blitzed the U-16 tie 5-0, Jacob Hermon providing a pair.
At U-18 level, first half goals from Kyle Marshall and Aaron Martin put Ulster 2-0 up and they stayed clear to land the win. Day two sees Munster play their double day, starting with ties against Ulster before meeting Leinster in the afternoon.
