Ulster take opening day laurels at boys Interpros

Ulster are in the box seat after day one of the schoolboys interprovincial championships at Grange Road following opening day wins over Leinster at both U-18 and U-16 level.

The day had started well for the blues with the U-16s beating Munster 5-2 in the first game of the competition, racing into a 3-0 lead and maintaining that advantage by virtue of Guy Sarratt’s hat trick.

The U-18s followed up with some real character to come from behind three times to eventually beat the southern province 4-3. Julian Dale had twice given Munster the lead as had Matthew Lee but Leinster eventually fought back in a rip-roaring second half to nick the win late on.

Leinster were unable to continue the momentum into their second games of the day against a fresher Ulster side, however, as the northern province blitzed the U-16 tie 5-0, Jacob Hermon providing a pair.

At U-18 level, first half goals from Kyle Marshall and Aaron Martin put Ulster 2-0 up and they stayed clear to land the win. Day two sees Munster play their double day, starting with ties against Ulster before meeting Leinster in the afternoon.
