Minogue and Pryce combine to land surprise Dalkey draw

Leinster Schoolgirls Premier round-up
Orla Minogue proved a brick wall in the Loreto Dalkey goal to break Alexandra College’s winning run in the Leinster schoolgirls senior premier league Section A.

In the face of a barrage, she produced a string of top stops before Aoife Pryce finished off a smash and grab chance in the second half to nick a 1-1 draw.

Alex started attacking well with Ava Beatty and Sophie Gleeson constant threats but they found their forwards just unable to connect with a series of crosses.

From left back, Gleeson’s mazy run saw her eliminate five players only for Minogue to save brilliantly at her feet. They duly hit the front when Louise McCollum drove down the baseline before picking out Sine Wickham on the penalty spot where she coolly trapped and slotted into the side-netting,

From there, they had several penalty corners with Minogue making a treble save at one point while Sarah Patton and Catherine Garner put in huge amount of work in front of her.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Alex dominating possession but ultimately not being able to break through as Dalkey defended with their lives in a great display of guts and heart.

And they caught Alex on the counter by an interception on halfway, setting up a three on three counter-attack which Pryce finished off with a neat deflection.

Alex had a late effort to win it ruled out for a foot but, despite their frustrations, Alex remain top of their section with four points to spare over second placed Mount Anville who they play on Saturday.

Mount Anville moved up to second in the group with their 2-1 win over Wesley last weekend but there is still just two points covering second to fifth place going into the closing couple of rounds of the group phase.

In Section B, High School produced a stunning second half fightback to lift them into the playoff positions in Section B of the Premier League, seeing off Holy Child Killiney last Saturday morning.

Killiney had yet to register a point in the group phases to date but they looked well set with Emma Mathews and Abbie Russell in excellent form, propelling the Military Road outfit into a 2-0 lead.

It left a fancied High School side reeling but they got back into the tie via two well worked goals from Leinster Under-18 representative Saoirse O’Donoghue to get her side back on terms.

Ailish Long, a provincial team mate, then won the tie in superb fashion, netting the go-ahead goal with an excellent first time shot before making extra sure in the closing stages.

St Gerard’s lead the way in the group with three successive wins, last week getting the better of Rathdown 4-2 with Lena Tice, Sarah O’Loughlin, Susie Cannon and Sadbh McCarthy countering goals from Amber Barnwell and Alana Horgan.

Earlier in the week, Rathdown had beaten Loreto Foxrock 2-1 with both goals coming from Chloe Eggers.

The Leinster Schoolgirls Junior Cup reaches the quarter-final stage with games down to be played on Saturday morning.

Loreto Beaufort reached the elite eight with a narrow 2-1 win over Loreto Dalkey last week with Lara MacMahon and Rachel Burke scoring the vital goals. As a result, Beaufort face yet another Loreto school, this time being drawn away to face Loreto Foxrock.

Mount Anville, meanwhile, were pushed all the way by King’s Hospital in their round of 16 game but Iseult McCrory’s goal sent the tie to extra time and ultimately penalties in which they prevailed 3-1. Their reward is a tough derby date with St Andrew’s College.

Wesley College will meet Muckross while the final match-up remains to be confirmed after Newbridge’s date with Loreto on the Green was delayed. The winner of that game will go on to meet Loreto Bray in a quickfire competition that is due for completion before Christmas.
