Kilkenny’s improving form saw them make it two wins from two in men’s Leinster division two as they won a 4-3 shoot-out in Mount Temple to beat Clontarf. They came from behind to do it against a Tarf side shy Rob Kelly, Gareth Borland and David Power through injury. Nonetheless, they built a 2-1 lead with Tom Noonan scoring twice in the first half, sandwiching a penalty stroke from Tom Manning off the back of his own 40-yard dash.
Noonan’s first goal was a stunner, cracking home a bouncing ball on the backhand from the right of the circle. Stuart Bradley equalised with a rare goal, ghosting forward from the back, when he got on the end of a long corner before Kevin Mullins restored the Bulls’ lead from a corner for 3-2.
Bradley got another with a freak effort that popped up off a twig on the pitch and over the sweeper’s stick. Kilkenny then won it from the penalty spot after a corner found its way on to a body on the line. Manning converted with five minutes to go.
On Sunday, Monkstown II moved equal top with Pembroke II with their 5-3 Sunday win over Fingal, making it a double-victory for the Rathdown club following their Saturday away win at Kilkeel in the Irish Junior Cup.
They were one of five sides from Leinster to win through with Glenanne, Three Rock Rovers, Railway Union and Pembroke all advancing while Avoca, Clontarf, Corinthian and YMCA bowing out.
