Another huge name will fall in the second round of the women’s Irish Senior Cup as the last two winners of the competition, UCD and Railway Union, have been paired against each other in a repeat of the 2014 IHL final.
It is, without doubt, the standout fixture of a reasonably well matched draw. Hermes will be keen to repeat their impressive 8-1 win over Old Alex in a Dublin derby while Corinthian face Glenanne, ensuring there will be at least three Leinster sides in the quarter-finals.
Pegasus trip to Pembroke will be a big test of the Dublin 4 side’s mettle. They have recruited well in the summer with Ayeisha McFerran and Alex Speers now in the mix.
Belfast Harlequins hosts Ballymoney in an Ulster derby while Lisnagarvey and Cork C of I will both be happy enough with being paired together. Cork Harlequins travel to Galway for the first time in the competition to play Greenfields.
On the men’s side, the pick of the bunch is Banbridge’s game against Cookstown. Three Rock open their title defence at UCD while Instonians have yet another away day, going down to Pembroke.
The other five games all feature IHL clubs against sides on the outside of the competition though Glenanne may feel the most confident of getting a result against UCC, a club their women ousted last weekend in their competition.
The draw for the Irish Junior Cup, Irish Hockey Trophy & Irish Hockey Challenge will take place 10am next Monday 13th October in the hockey offices in UCD.
