Men’s Irish Senior Cup first round
Nick Burns fired Pembroke through to the second round of the men’s Irish Senior Cup after YMCA pushed them all the way, leading twice but ultimately coming unstuck.
Indeed, YM were up 3-2 on the final hooter only for Maurice Elliott, their tormentor in the league tie, to deflect home a corner move that sent it to extra time.
From there, Burns got a fortuitous break before unleashing a smart bunt into the roof of the net to win the game in the second period of extra time.
It saw them win the Leinster derby and advance to the last 16 as one of eight teams from the province in the draw set to take place on Monday morning in the IHA offices.
Burns had put Pembroke one up in the first half from a corner with a powerful low push only for YM to bounce back. Rob Anderson scored an excellent effort while Graham McCoy finished off a right wing, counter-attack move.
Patrick Shanahan picked out Cillian Hynes who provided a typically unorthodox squeeze shot over Iain Walker to make it 2-2 but Jamie Tobin’s instant riposte put the Y back in front and closing in on a famous win.
But Pembroke’s late show broke their resolve and left them out of the cup. Corinthian were 2-1 winners over Newry in the battle of the reds with Dan Treacy and Ian Stewart both scoring their third goals of the season to secure the result.
Injury-hit Avoca, though, bowed out of the competition on home soil against Cork C of I who prevailed 4-1 in spite of Ziggy Agnew’s corner goal.
Banbridge ran up a second double figures victory in two weeks with a 12-3 win over Kilkeel, following soon after a similarly emphatic 14-0 success over Belfast Harlequins in the Ulster league.
Harlequins, themselves, advanced with a 2-1 win over NICS. Lisnagarvey scored a 2-0 win over Annadale while Instonians brought the Ulster total to six competitors with a 4-1 win on the road at Cork Harlequins.
