Five-star Alex see off Mount Sackville

Alexandra College made it two wins from two in the Schoolgirls Premier League, Section A as they produced an excellent performance to see off Mount Sackville 5-1.

It added to their opening 1-0 win over Muckross Park and puts them in a decent position to make it through to the semi-finals from the seven-team group.

They started well, with driving attacks from Louise McCollum down the right and Ava Beatty on the opposite flank, causing regular overloads for their forwards.

From one of these attacks up the right, McCollum picked out Lucie Wolfe in the circle who crossed for Sine Wickham to finish off at the back post. They remained mainly in the ascendancy but were caught on the counter-attack 20 minutes in, turning over ball on halfway and racing in unopposed one-on-one with Ruth Cullen and slotting home.

From there, they frustrated Alex for long periods with their goalkeeper saving shots from Wolfe and Freya McDermott.

But another McCollum drive eliminated her player and then a great cross was deflected in by Beatty to make it 2-1 on the stroke of half time.

The Milltown school duly cut loose in the second half, creating plenty of chances in the first ten minutes of the second period through Abi Acheson, Sophie Roopnarinesingh and Beatty while Pia Diepman controlled things at the back.

Wolfe scored from a baseline pull back; Diepman then scored a deflected corner and the final goal was finished off by Sine Wickham as her initial shot that was saved but she picked up the rebound. It means they lead the way in their group at this earlys stage.

In Section B, High School are currently topping the group having shaded a thriller last Saturday morning 3-2 against Loreto Beaufort to add to an opening day scoreless draw against Loreto Foxrock.

Alana Horgan struck twice for Rathdown as they beat Holy Child Killiney 3-2 to pick up their first win of the season in a week when Olympic boxer Darren O’Neill was on hand to provide insight to the players on elite sport.
He conducted a session in tandem with school coach Graham Shaw at their base in Glenageary.

King’s Hospital edged Foxrock 3-2 last week, too, to make it five teams from the seven on one win so far in the campaign. St Gerard’s, having played just once, are the only side with a perfect record.
