Daring too slick as Town’s EHL journey ends

Euro Hockey League
Pool B: Royal Daring 3 (T Cosyns, V Megnez, G Cosyns) Monkstown 0

Monkstown’s EHL journey came to an end with plenty of perspiration but they could not find the inspiration to pull off a result against one of the stand-out sides in Barcelona this weekend.

The Belgian side Daring, making their debut in the competition, proved a formidable foe in the scorching mid-afternoon heat. Their sharpness gave Graham Shaw’s side a big test.

They did have their corners once again but this time, Daring were far more in control than Racing a day earlier with Argentine Manu Brunet and Spanish defender Sergi Enrique cutting composed figures.

Tanguy Cosyns scored a spectacular opening goal from their first penalty corner in the eighth minute. It stayed at 1-0, though, due to some excellent goalkeeping from David Fitzgerald while Lee Cole and Richard Sykes produced a number of big tackles.

Davy Carson’s snap-shot did test Pol Garcia-Gascon while Gareth Watkins caused a few problems. Jof Cosyns saw a couple of raspers denied by Fitzgerald, keeping it at 1-0 at the break.

From a Brunet dash forward, his shot was redirected into the goal by the lively Victor Wegnez for 2-0 on 40 minutes. Monkstown did win three penalty corners around the three quarter mark but could not convert while Jof Cosyns vollyed home a third goal on the final whistle to add extra garnish to the win.

Their second match is on Sunday at 2.30pm (CET) while Monkstown end the competition with one point to their name.
