The lowdown: Reigning champions in Leinster and both national competitions, UCD are once again over-whelming favourites to win everything in the game after a high volume of new arrivals while Anna O’Flanagan, Nikki Evans, Jeamie Deacon and Sarah Greene are set to continue for a year’s grace.
Indeed, working out his best 16 will be a particularly difficult task. Among the new arrivals are eight Irish underage internationals with plenty of first division experience between them. Niamh Atcheler is the biggest name to depart as she is currently in New Zealand having played for Capital in the NZ Ford Hockey League. Her distribution from the back will be a key element to replace but it is hard to see too many chinks in their armoury this year, especially with their nearest rivals in Leinster perhaps taking a step back.
Their one concern could come in the New Year when international concerns may limit the availability of their seven current Irish squad members but they look like they have the panel to cover any problems. Last year, they landed a treble – this year, there is a potential quadruple on the table, returning to the Jacqui Potter Cup after a one season suspension.
