Dempsey gets Fingal off to a flyer in second tier

Men’s Leinster Division Two – day one
Shane Dempsey showed that Fingal should have plenty of life in this division despite dropping down from the top tier as he netted four times in an impressive away win at Corinthian.

The ALSAA men have a number of strong faces still around with a grizzled back line of Ben Chillingworth, Conor Connolly and Eamon Bane – back from a year out injured – among them while David Bane also made an appearance.

With Dempsey on corners and Conor Wheeler, Jack McKeever and Marcus O’Brien up front, they will cause problems for teams when they can get a consistent team out. Rob McKenna got the reds’ reply in his last game before moving to New Zealand for a year for work.

Railway Union II were hugely impressive following promotion to the second tier as Dan Rees fired a hat trick as they raided Kilkenny with a 5-1 victory.

Reigning champions Pembroke II beat Three Rock II on the opening day of the season for the second year running, building a healthy three goal lead.

They came via Scott Sullivan, Geoff Garrett ,on his return after a year with Trinity, and a fortuitous David Loughrey shot that took a wicked deflection off a defender. Luke McSharry got one back from close range.

Clontarf picked up a good win over Monkstown II, Kevin Mullins and Luke Hayden giving them a two-goal lead before the Rathdown side got one back with the game in its dying embers.

YMCA II won in Sutton 3-2. Tim Blythman got them off the mark with a back post finish only for Robbie O’Hanlon to equalise moments later. David Mawhinney reasserted the lead with a tidy finish after a surging run.

Once again, Suttonians responded quickly with Mark Ryan scoring from another corner to make it 2-2 at the break. A red card for Suttonians in the second half, however, saw YM enjoy a much more controlled second half and they got their winner when Stephen Barry scored a corner drag-flick to win all three points.

Results: Clontarf 2 (K Mullins, L Hayden) Monkstown II 1; Kilkenny 1 Railway Union 5 (D Rees 3, J Pearson, P Yates); Suttonians 2 (R O’Hanlon, M Ryan) YMCA II 3 (T Blythman, D Mawhinney, S Barry); Pembroke II 3 (S Sullivan, G Garrett, D Loughrey) Three Rock Rovers II 1 (L McSharry); Corinthian II 1 (R McKenna) Fingal 5 (S Dempsey 4, C Wheeler)
