** “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that don’t work” – Thomas Edison
Failure might not have been an option for Apollo 13, as the famous quote from NASA’s Gene Kranz goes, but without it, Yvonne O’Byrne wouldn’t be where she is today.
** Tweet of the Week – Glenanne play tribute to club member Paula Fitzpatrick for playing her part in the Irish women’s rugby team’s superb performance against New Zealand in the World Cup this week

** Sticking with New Zealand rugby, the legendary Dan Carter’s recent broken leg has brought up fears that he may be following the “Dean Barker, so I married a hockey player curse”. The legendary out-half is married to former Blackstick Honor Dillon, capped 68 times, and is part of a chain of trysts between top hockey players and top kiwi sportsmen in recent years.
Click here for The Rock radio station’s take on the situation, taking in Barker’s marriage to Mandy Smith and 2013 FIH player of the year nominee Kayla Sharland’s December wedding to Crusaders’ George Whitelock while there are fears over Richie McCaw’s fledgling relationship with Gemma Flynn.
** Beeston’s George Pinner and East Grinstead’s Iain Lewers – along with Reading’s Nick Catlin – made headlines earlier this summer when they put aside EuroHockey League hockey to join Barry Middleton and Dan Fox in the second tier of English hockey at Holcombe.
But their transfers are likely to create nowhere near as much fear for their opposition as the participants of Germany’s fourth division. Hamburger Polo have signed up Olympic gold medalists Carlos Nevado (from UHC Hamburg), Matthias Witthaus and Max Weinhold for the new season.
A tidy, hard-running midfielder, some of Nevado’s most stylish stuff can be seen in the following video from about the 4.10 mark, setting up one goal and then scoring a screamer in the 2009 EHL semi-final for UHC Hamburg against KHC Leuven (ps it’s a truly brilliant video highlight package!)
It follows hot on the heels of another golden boy Jan-Marco Montag who is moving from Rot Weiss Koln to city rivals Blau Weiss, a side that did not win a single point last year in the second tier of Germany’s Bundesliga Nord.
Any word of division two and three sides in Leinster following suit and snapping up internationals this summer?
** An oldie but a goldie, Dinamo Elektrostal score a late one against an English selection in 2010. Cracking goal and celebration to boot!
