The Ireland Masters 40s have made eight changes to the squad that competed at the Masters World Cup in June as they begin their Home Nations weekend against Scotland this evening at 7.30pm in Lisnagarvey.The tie will see debuts at this level for John Tormey, Ian Clarke, Neil Cooke, Allen Irwin, Grattan Evans and Dougie Good with Jason Hill and Colin Mockford returning to the squad, bringing a variety of experiences to the table.
Instonians’ Neil Cooke, a ferocious competitor, adds to the senior international experience of the panel, joining Julian Stevenson in the side as players who have lined out at the top level.
Tormey, meanwhile, played in the Euro Hockey League with Garvey a couple of seasons ago, reaching the KO16. Ian Clarke, with Glenanne, and Dougie Good, with Pembroke, have plenty of medals in the cabinets at national level while Grattan Evans has played in almost every division of Leinster hockey with Bray, an ever-present in their rise up to division one in the 2000s.
Paul Fitzpatrick captains the side and played a number of games for Three Rock Rovers’ first team, a side he co-coaches, last term. In the back line, Fitzpatrick is joined by long-time Glens’ club mate Clinton Murphy with Railway Union’s Paul O’Brien and Monkstown pair Ian Stuart and David Jenkins among the other Leinster-based players representing the side.
The schedule of games will see Ireland line out against England at 3.30pm on Saturday with the final fixture against Wales at 11am Sunday morning.
