Wesley land Minor A league title after thrilling first half

Wesley College secured a well deserved 3-1 win against St Andrews College today in glorious sunshine at Grange Road in the Girls Minor A League final as the LHA schools finals light up the local calendar.

It was a fine team effort with all the goals being scored in a high tempo first half. Wesley took an early lead in the second minute when a clearance out of defence by Emily McKay was picked up in midfield by Leah Paul, who passed onto Jessica McGrane, who in turn found Lara Gillespie at the far post to knock it in.

Despite some heroic goalkeeping by Wesley’s Victoria Brooks, St. Andrews got the equaliser seven minutes later. From there, Wesley took control, applying constant pressure on the St. Andrews goal and took the lead through Gillespie in the 20th minute, again after some fine passing play. Just before half time Wesley got their third goal when the strong McGrane crashed the ball into the net.

The early part of the second half was end to end with St Andrews having two short corners cleared either side of another Wesley attack which saw the ball just going wide. Although Andrew’s never gave up and continued to apply pressure, it was Wesley’s day and a fitting end to the season for captain Jody Douglas and coach Ruth Henderson.

It was one of a series of finals decided over the past few days. Habika O’Connor’s extra time goal helped Alexandra College complete the Junior Premier League and Cup double as she got the only goal of a pulsating tie against Rathdown.

Loreto Beaufort won on the same 1-0 scoreline in the Senior 4 final against Wilson’s Hospital while Manor House claimed the Minor D final.

On Monday, there was joy for Cross and Passion, Kilcullen this afternoon as they claimed their first ever hockey trophy with a 2-0 win against Wesley College in the Junior D final at Grange Road. Leinster U-16 captain Miah Phelan was on the mark along with Susan Dunne.

Our Lady’s Terenure won the Junior One league with a victory on penalties after normal time and extra time could not separate them and St Columba’s. Rathdown won the Junior B league with a 1-0 win over Mount Anville.

Last Friday, Teresians beat Holy Child Killiney 2-1 in the Senior 1 final and they are hoping to complete a double on Friday in the Senior Plate decider. They beat Alexandra College in the semi-final 3-1 and are now lining up a date with Loreto on the Green.
