Women’s Leinster Division Two
Free-scoring Muckross made it two wins in quick succession in Leinster women’s division two as they followed up their 5-0 win on Thursday night against Hermes II with a 2-0 win on Sunday against Railway Union II to move back up to third place.
Importantly, it has put five points between them and Genesis who lie in fifth place with a game in hand, putting the Dublin 4 side in pole position for a promotion shot. After a hectic start to their game against Railway, Sarah Cooney opened the scoring early on, finally converting after five consecutive short corners were awarded.
Muckross continued to apply the pressure, but failed to convert this into clear cut chances. In the second-half, Railway found it difficult to create chances going forward as co-captain and sweeper Jeananne Fennelly was in sparkling form and near impossible to get by, breaking down numerous Railway attacks.
Muckross looked dangerous on the counter attack for much of the half, and converted a second goal through Jane Gilsenan to put the result beyond doubt. Pembroke II, meanwhile, moved within two wins of the title with their 12th successive victory in the league.
Shona Doyle scored inside three minutes against Genesis to get her side off to a great start and they were 2-0 up within 30 seconds of the break. Emma Kielthy drove into the circle down the right before picking out Anna O’Neill who slotted her ninth goal of the season.
Mary Kavanagh pulled one back in the second period only for Tara Junghenn to seal the result with a special third goal, a first time flick home following a great run and pass from Doyle.
Loreto II remain 11 points back courtesy of a 2-0 win over Trinity while Old Alex II moved out of the relegation zone for the first time this season with a 2-1 win over UCD II. They moved ahead of Three Rock Ladies who were on the receiving end of a Hermes II backlash, bouncing back from their 5-0 loss to Muckross with a big 7-1 win just a couple of days later.
