Lyons makes Pembroke II wait for title coronation

Women’s Leinster Division Two
Phoebe Lyons’ early goal on Monday night meant that Pembroke II’s wait for the women’s Leinster division two title will be put on hold for another little while as Loreto II kept a small sliver of hope alive that they might deny them.

The Beaufort side kept out nine penalty corners from Pembroke to record a 1-0 win and move to six points behind the Dublin 4 albeit with a game extra played. But Pembroke have revealed a little bit of vulnerability after a flawless first 12 games this season, succumbing to a Hermes fightback from 2-0 down to drop points in their previous outing.

As such, they have an interesting double weekend ahead, facing Railway Union II in the league on Saturday and then an Irish Junior Cup quarter-final on Sunday against Pegasus. Railway, for their part missed out on victory in their Thursday night build-up game against UCD II as Natasha Cooke saved a last minute penalty stroke in their scoreless draw.

Earlier in the week, two counter-attack goals from Three Rock Ladies earned them a fourth win of the season to get back into range of Old Alex II with a view to escaping the bottom two rungs of the division. Maebh Holden put them ahead before schoolgirl Aoife McNulty grabbed the winner against Muckross 2-1.

For Muckross, they were spared further damage however by Trinity II’s second win of the season, seeing off Genesis 1-0 to keep three points between those two sides in the battle to be the top first team in the division.

Just two games will be played in the division this weekend; the aforementioned Railway vs Pembroke dust-up along with Three Rock’s key game against Trinity II.
