The first half ended scoreless as both defences stood tall, Ireland featuring Audrey O’Flynn in her 100th international cap at the back.

The second half was much more open as Rocio Ybarra put Spain in front in the 42nd minute but the lead was swapped when Anna O’Flanagan latched onto a great pass from Megan Frazer to equalise. Naomi Carroll subsequently made it 2-1 within five minutes from another sharp move.

Cliodhna Sargent went close to extending the margin from a corner before Oliva levelled matters from a corner rebound, shovelling past debutante Ayeisha McFerran who entered the fray at half-time. Deirdre Duke was denied an effort to retake the lead but, with less then ten seconds remaining, Spain countered with the stocky Lopez finding the winner.
