Premier semi-final line-up finally confirmed

The Senior Schoolgirls Premier league semi-final opponents were confirmed this afternoon with Mount Sackville set to play Rathdown while Alexandra College will meet St Andrew’s.

Mount Sackville completed the final four line-up with a 2-1 win over Wesley just before Christmas. That result pulled them level with Andrew’s on 14 points at the head of the division, meaning they needed to playoff to see who topped the pool.

A similar situation occurred in Section B where Alexandra College tied with Rathdown on 15 points, leading to a playoff on Tuesday with the Milltown outfit winning 2-0.

As a result, Mount Sackville’s 2-1 win extra time win in their playoff against St Andrew’s saw them set up their date with Rathdown. Molly Higgins-Jackson got the winner, a true mad-cap scramble less than 30 seconds from the end of the first period of silver goal.

Early on, Andrew’s held the box-seat as they won a quartet of penalty corners and hit the front when Claudia Larmour mopped up the second phase of the fourth set piece.

Sarah Hawkshaw, though, was a star performer for Sackville and she duly created and completed her side’s equalising goal. Her sharp turn won her side’s only corner of the first half and while the push out went a bit further left than intended, it was smartly turned on to Hawkshaw’s reverse and she thumped home a powerful shot.

From there, the hosts rode their luck as St Andrew’s ran up nine corners as Rachel O’Brien’s pace from left midfield and sweeper Megan Carroll proved key elements. They found Eimear Byrne in top form, though, as the goalkeeper smothered one melee in front of goal while producing a great double save from Tatiana Temperley and Sally Campbell.

Campbell was also denied moments from the end of normal time by Aislinn Roche with a great block on the line. In extra-time, Aoife Daly kept Andrew’s just ahead with a top stop while Ellen Beirne was next to be denied by Byrne.

From a quick break, Mount Sackville won the day. Breaking into the circle down the right, Daly kept out two waves of the attack amid a huge scramble on the goal-line but the ball eventually fell to Higgins-Jackson to shovel the ball over the line.

Mount Sackville will now play Rathdown on January 21 while Alex meet St Andrew’s on January 16 in the semi-finals.

Elsewhere, High School started their Senior Cup campaign with an 8-1 win over Mount Temple.
