High School’s seniors advanced to the final of the Claudia Tierney Cup as they got the better of Loreto Dalkey last Thursday, running out 3-0 winners. The Rathgar school started the match the stronger and took the lead within the first two minutes.
Irish Under-16 Ailish Long intercepted a Dalkey hit out and duly attacked with pace, switching the ball out right and back into the centre where the ball deflected off a defender’s stick into the air and Long finished superbly into the back of the net.High school remained strong for the remainder of the first half with Saoirse O’Donoghue controlling the game while Dalkey attacked of the break with Sorcha Clarke impressing with her speed and skills. The slick work of Long and Emma Canning in midfield, though, for the Rathgar side would pay dividends.
The second goal came from a break down the right when Dalkey goalkeeper Orla Minogue, who impressed throughout, initially saved but the rebound fell kindly to Julienne Stewart who finished neatly.
Dalkey had a couple of chances with Irish U-16 Sarah Patton being a continuous threat throughout. But High School closed out the tie with their third goal early in the second half when Ellie Conheady make a break down the left, beating the whole back line and finished nicely.
From there, the side never looked back and showed their composure to see out the win. However Dalkey came close to getting one back when Clarke made a beautiful run and attacked with pace only for O’Donoghue to break down play. Nothing further accrued from it meaning the clean sheet was preserved.
Elsewhere, St Andrew’s earned the first Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League final berth last Thursday when they beat Alexandra College 2-1 in a high quality tie. They will now play the winner of Rathdown and Mount Sackville, a tie being played at 12pm in Grange Road on Tuesday.
At Junior Premier level, the playoff line-up is edging ever closer. Muckross Park will top Section A following three wins and a draw from their four games, confirming their passage to the semi-finals. St Gerard’s need a point from their game against Wesley to advance to the quarter-final stages but a loss could open the door for Loreto Foxrock to nab the space instead.
In Section B, Alexandra College and King’s Hospital are in pole position to take the playoff berths while in Section C, Mount Anville will take one quarter-final berth while St Kilian’s have the edge currently in a battle with Rathdown and Mount Sackville for the other one on offer.
