Schoolgirls Senior Cup, first round
Wesley College battled their way to a penalties win over Alexandra College in the first round with Carolyn Crampton putting in a superb performance between the posts in the marquee tie of the first round of the competition.
Alex started the game well, dominating the first half and limiting their opposition to just one circle entry during that time. They created several chances of note with Anna Roopnarinesingh, Louise McPhillips and Louise McCollum causing most of the damage.
But any ball inside the perimeter of the penalty spot and the goal was ambushed by Crampton and cleared to safety. Rachel Gray when on the pitch in her first game in six weeks due to injury but found her involvement curtailed while Amber Gleeson was unavailable, meaning Alex played with a youthful midfield.
They helped them move 1-0 up when the pressure eventually told as a crash ball from Millie O’Donnell went in off a defender while under huge pressure from several Alex forwards.
The second half, however, was a very different story as Wesley played a much higher press, playing with huge fire in their bellies to force a string of errors, getting them regular circle entries while Hannah McKay stepped forward to impressive effect.
Sara Quill got them level when a loose ball fell into space and the striker reached it first and shot first time, launching the ball into the net. Alex regrouped but again could not break through. Extra time flew by, leading to penalties where Crampton once again excelled with the Ballinteer school prevailing 3-1.
Elsewhere, six of the first round ties fell victim of the frost. St Andrew’s tie with Loreto Dalkey was initially postponed from Saturday morning but was played on Monday and saw the Booterstown school go through 4-1 with Tatiana Temperly on the mark twice to annul Sorcha Clarke’s effort.
Muckross were 4-0 winners over Santa Sabina, High School got the better of Mount Temple 8-1 while Loreto Beaufort held St Kilian’s at bay, building a 3-1 half-time lead before eventually winning out by the old goal in five.
While a few kinks need to be ironed out in the second round draw, some well-matched ties are on the horizon. The winner of Holy Child and Mount Sackville will host Loreto Beaufort while Wesley will potentially play Rathdown should the latter get the better of St Columba’s.
Reigning champions Mount Anville start their campaign with an away date at near neighbours Notre Dame.
