Wesley and Alex close in on semi-final berths

Wesley College and Alexandra College moved within touching distance of qualification for the semi-finals of the Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League as they are the sole unbeaten sides left in their respective groups.

In Section B, Alex made it five wins from five when they broke Rathdown’s perfect record as a goal in each half proved enough in a 2-0 win.

Alex started with a very high press to create pressure on Rathdown’s main outletting threat with the spine of the team, particularly Millie O’Donnell and Amber Gleeson, picked up crash balls and fed their other midfielders.

Katherine Egan was particularly impressive on the right, going past players and creating danger in her second game for the senior team while forwards Emily McCollum and Anna Roopnarinesingh causing problems.

From one such attack, the latter ran into a crowded circle and let rip with an open-side shot into the bottom corner. Another attack saw Lucie Wolfe through on goal and she expertly rounded the keeper but then missed the open goal.

Rathdown had a couple of chances on the counter-attack in the first half but they found it tough to break out in the second period, conceding seven penalty corners.

With seven minutes to go, a broken down corner fell to Gleeson and she fired against the backboard to copper-fasten the win. That result puts Alex three clear of Rathdown and six ahead of High School though they have a game in hand and can sneak into the top two.

St Gerard’s picked up a big win against Loreto, Forxrock to complete the group on six points but, like Muckross and King’s Hospital, all are out of the running for the final four.

In Section A, Wesley College are the best placed side to advance as they won 5-0 against Loreto Dalkey in midweek to move them up to 13 points from five games to date.

While unlikely they will miss out on a semi-final place, they are not yet fully assured of making it through with the final round of matches set for December 14 due to decide matters.

St Andrew’s are two points back on 11 thanks to a pivotal 4-2 win over Dalkey last Saturday morning. Mount Anville, by virtue of 2-1 win over Mount Sackville in which Ailbhe Marsh and Sara Twomey were both on the mark, are still an interested party if they can overcome Dalkey on the final day.
