Winning interpro starts for both Leinster sides

Leinster’s U-18 and U-16 girls both got up in running in the interprovincial championships with wins over Connacht on day one in Garryduff.

The U-16s started their campaign with a 5-1 win with impressive performances from Emma Mathews, Abbie Russell and Sophie Roopnarinesingh helping them on their way.

After an initially tight start, they nabbed a 2-1 lead from a corner rebound and duly ran up a 5-1 win with Mathews scoring twice while Abbie Russell, Suzanne Kelly and an own goal were also on the mark.

Ulster look their major opposition after they were 6-0 winners over the South East while Munster shaded a 1-0 result in Connacht’s second game of the day, Roisin Begley the scorer.

At U-18 level, Sorcha Clarke’s solo strike proved the winner over Connacht for Leinster, netting in the 39th minute. Her side missed out from the penalty spot before the break while they also had an effort on the final whistle ruled out from a corner, the ball hitting a foot before Anna Roopnarinesingh popped the ball home.

They are top of the group with Ulster and Munster who both picked off wins over the South East. Edel Nyland’s double underpinned a 3-0 win for Munster while Ulster were pushed all the way by South East. At the break, Aisling Cronin netted twice to keep Ulster in reach at 3-2 but a second half goal gave the northern province a little bit more breathing room.
