The lowdown: Loreto start the season already badly hit by injuries with current international player Lizzie Colvin and past international player Cathy McKean out for the season with cruciate knee injuries. Both injuries happened within a week of each other back in July. In addition, Sarah Evans is out until after Christmas with a cruciate sustained at Irish U-18 training back in April.

It could scarcely be worse-timed with Nicci Daly playing again with Holcombe in England while Nikki Symmons’ work has seen her move to Switzerland. Aisling Campion’s career may also take her to the UK after a season studying abroad.

On the plus side, the club welcome back Louisa Healy in goal whose career with the Gardai has prevented her from full-time availability for the last two years. With 50 Irish international caps under her belt, her experience will be welcomed.

There are opportunities for promising schoolgirls Jessica McGirr of Loreto Beaufort, who captained the Irish U-18s this summer, to cement a place in the team along with Bryony Biggam and Lauren O’Leary who are both currently training with the Leinster U-18 squad.

Captained by Hannah Matthews, last season’s vice-captain and her defensive partnership with Sarah Clarke will again be a bedrock of the side while Niamh Small and Hayley Mulcahy provide the shooting threat, prompted by Ali Meeke. Trevor Dagg gets back in the senior coaching game after a couple of years out having worked well with YMCA’s men previously.

First three games: Sept 28 vs Glenanne (h); Oct 5 vs Old Alex (a); Oct 12 vs Railway Union (a)
