Four-star Avoca and Suttonians land early wins

Men’s Leinster Division Two
Kilkenny 2 (Eddie Dore, Eoin Finnegan) Avoca 4 (Andrew Ramsey 2, Martin Naughton, Dante Tait)

Avoca saw off a fast-countering Kilkenny to get their season up and running with a good win in a high tempo fixture. Eddie Dore put the cats in front against the run of play on the quarter hour with a great finish but the Blackrock side were level soon after when Dante Tait thumped home a penalty corner. Andrew Ramsay then finished off a scrappy corner after the initial injection went awry, making it 2-1 at half-time.

Again, Kilkenny got back on terms via a quick break, hitting centre-forward Eoin Finnegan quickly and he deliciously chipped over Stefan Gallagher. But Ramsay doubled his tally with a clever reverse-stick finish, drawing the goalkeeper and slipping the ball home.

601442_299337936832664_926403725_nMartin Naughton then completed the win with his side’s fourth which killed off the tie. For a youthful Avoca, they look forward to welcoming back Rob Pearson to the side next week while Kilkenny are currently without Emmett Hughes with a broken ankle sustained during the summer.

Monkstown II 1 (David Nolan) Clontarf 1 (Cain Cooney)
Monkstown II and Clontarf shared the spoils in a quality affair at Rathdown in which the Bulls held on for a point with Stephen Cairns having a strong game between the posts. Cain Cooney put them in front when he got on the end of a John Mullins cross at the back post in the 20th minute. David Nolan equalised just before half-time, however, when he worked a smart corner one-two move for 1-1. From there, Monkstown had the better of the second half but found Cairns unbeatable.

Pembroke II 3 (Scott Furlong 2, Doug Good) Three Rock Rovers II 2 (Steven Roberts, Harry Morris)
Dougie Good’s late corner goal saw Pembroke II get their league campaign off and running in dramatic fashion. Scott Furlong’s corner double had Pembroke 2-0 up as they enjoyed a strong start to the tie. They were pegged back by a smart Three Rock long corner move, swept into the circle by Johnny Dalrymple and finished off first time from the top of the circle by Steven Roberts. They equalised via Dylan Shirley’s cross, chipped over Hugh Lavery by Harry Morris. But Pembroke earned a couple of late corners and worked one smartly back to injector Good who slapped home first time.

Suttonians 4 (Eise Lodewijk 2, Mark Ryan, Keith O’Hare) Weston 0
Four second half goals saw Suttonians start their season with a bang at Sutton Park. After a closely fought first half, it was scoreless at the break despite two good efforts from Jack Ryan that hit the post. But the hosts ran free in the second period. Keith O’Hare – who impressed in the centre backs with Gavin O’Brien – netted a drag flick while Mark Ryan scored from the penalty spot. Eise Lodewijk netted twice from close range, one of which came from Mark Ryan’s initial incision. Captain Enda Tucker went closest for Weston, his drag-flick and follow-up shot drawing a fine double save from James Murtagh at 2-0 but they were unable to threaten further.
