Sarah Patton’s hat trick saw Loreto, Dalkey start their Leinster Schoolgirl’s Premier League with a great comeback win but St Kilian’s, playing in the top tier for the very first time, certainly provided plenty to a thrilling 5-3 tie.
Played at Dalkey’s idyllic ground over-looking the Irish sea, the hosts came from 2-1 down to eventually take the laurels with Patton netting twice in the second half to finally swing the game her school’s way.
For Kilian’s, though, it was a hugely encouraging performance on debut with skipper Tara Junghenn impressing in defence. In the early stages, her side kept out a series of corners while Emma Prehn, Aine Burns and Ellen Kane also did well to keep the scoreboard blank.
And they hit the front from a corner of their own when Junghenn swept the ball to Katie Mullen to smash goalward. Her effort was saved but Junghenn rebounded for 1-0.
Dalkey, though, piled on fierce pressure and were rewarded by an equaliser by Patton. Kilian’s, however, bounced back and were in front again when Anna Heisterkamp rebounded from another Mullen shot for the half-time lead.
The hosts got back on terms for the second time six minutes into the second half with Sorcha Clarke on the mark and they moved in front for the first time with 14 minutes to go via Elena Nolan.
With seven minutes left, Patton looked to have closed out the win when she grabbed Dalkey’s fourth but Nina and Anna Heisterkamp combined to create Kilian’s third goal. Third year Nina, the younger sister, got on the end of a mazy move, drilling home to make it 4-3.
Patton, though, finally got the definitive goal with three minutes to go to start Dalkey’s season with victory in Section A. St Andrew’s, meanwhile, recorded an opening day 4-0 win over Mount Anville with Rachel O’Brien grabbing a brace.
In Section B, Freya McDermott’s double helped Old Alex start their campaign with a 3-1 win over St Gerard’s. Rathdown picked off a 3-1 win over High School with Sarah Hyland, Amber Barnwell and Karla Ray on the mark.
