Group A
Belgium vs Belarus 5-1 (half-time: 1-0)

Ireland’s group opponent’s Belgium produced a stunning second half performance to open their women’s TriFinance EuroHockey Championships in style, seeing off Belarus 5-1 in Boom.

Stefanie de Groof eventually put her side in front when she swept home a penalty corner – her side’s sixth of the half – in the 30th minute. Prior to that, they were frustrated as Anne-Sophie de Scheemaekere fired two corners over the crossbar while another five of their corners were denied by Maryna Navitskaya.

But the hosts cut loose in the second half, netting four times in the first 12 minutes of the second half. Jill Boon started the run when she latched on to a long overhead and arrowed home as she drifted to the right of the circle.

EuroHockey 2013Erica Coppey’s impudent finish made it 2-0, slotting home from close to the baseline after Barbara Nelen and Alix Gerniers made the opening.

Another flowing move a few seconds later saw Louise Versavel clean through to rocket a shot into the top corner. And Charlotte de Vos added to the goal-rush in the 47th minute, volleying home a loose ball from mid-circle.

Krestina Kulinkovich got a consolation goal for Belarus with three minutes to go from Sviatlina Bahushevich’s smart pass.
