Shimmins in for Masters as Ireland face three of world’s top four

Kirk Shimmins has been brought in as a last minute replacement to make his senior international debut in place of Davy Carson for the Hamburg Masters which gets underway this afternoon in Germany.

The call up comes for the Pembroke teenager just a month after completing his Leaving Certificate. The diminutive midfielder will be one of two debutants along with Matthew Bell as he replaces Carson who is injured.

DSC_6112The Masters is Ireland’s primary warm-up event for August’s European championships as they take on three of the world’s top four in quick succession.

They meet the hosts and world number ones this afternoon at 2pm (Irish time) before meeting the Netherlands on Saturday and England on Sunday. The latter travel without their talisman Ashley Jackson while Mark Gleghorne is also out due to injury.
