EuroHockey U-18 girls Youth Championships
Ireland 0 Netherlands 6 (G Zerbo 2, F Matla, T van Ramshorst, S Slinkert, M Kerstolt)
Tournament favourites the Netherlands swept Ireland aside with a classy 6-0 win at Belfield last night, making them the first confirmed EuroHockey U-18 girls youth championships semi-finalists.
Richie Malone’s side were well beaten against a classy Holland side who moved the ball with pace and precision while displaying some great individual skills.
Frederique Matla got the Dutch up and running in the 11th minute from a corner after two earlier efforts were blocked. Several more corners followed with the superb Ayeisha McFerran producing some great stops before Tess van Ramshorst with a low strike seven minutes before the break.
Ginella Zerbo netted twice early in the second half, the first from close range, the second after Sabine Plonissen’s incisive pass. Kiki van Wijk set up the fifth with 15 minutes to go with Sophie Slinkert finishing off.
Maxime Kerstolt rounded out the half-dozen with a nicely taken shot. Ireland’s best chance fell to Zara Thom and Emma Kernohan but they were unable to finish off the two on one with the score at 4-0.
Coach Malone said afterwards: “We always knew it was going to be a tough game against the Dutch, they really stepped up a gear from their performance against France yesterday.
“Whilst we were capable of meeting the challenge, we made too many basic errors on the day. But this game was about the experience and we will learn from that and move on to our next game against the French.”
Earlier in the day, France got off the mark with a 2-0 win over Wales. The result means the Dutch go through to the semi-finals with a game to spare while either Ireland or France joining them following their match-up on Thursday.
