News in brief: O’Donnell makes EHF list


** Shane O’Donnell has been included on the European Hockey Federation’s list of 20 umpires from 16 nations to take part in their new Umpires For Europe initiative.

The programme will start with a practical weekend in Breda, The Netherlands, on August 23 to 25 and will run for the remainder of 2013 with various seminars and support for the umpires.


** Holy Child Killiney are looking for a coach for the 2013/14 season. They require a coach with a minimum of an IHA Level One coaching qualification and Code of Ethics completion.

The job involves two days after school as well as availability on Saturday mornings. Rate of pay subject to successful candidate’s qualifications and experience. Applications for this position (including CV) should be forwarded to by Monday May 13.

** Tullamore Hockey Club is looking for a senior coach for their two senior women’s teams for the 2013/14 season. For more information contact Clodagh Armitage on 087 232 6612 and

** Avoca, LauraLynn and Enva signed a 10-year partnership that will see Enva donating to LauraLynn and sponsoring Avoca Hockey, while Avoca Hockey club is selecting LauraLynn as its Charity Partner.

This agreement involves LauraLynn branding appearing all on Avoca gear and all Enva sites and vehicles. In addition to a significant annual fixed donation, Enva will engage with its staff, customers (over 5,000) and suppliers to raise further funds for LauraLynn. Avoca Hockey Club will hold dedicated fundraising events each year for LauraLynn and support Lauralynn’s own fundraising activity.

Commenting on the agreement Audrey Jones of LauraLynn said: “This partnership will not only bring much needed financial support, our partnership with Enva and Avoca will help promote LauraLynn and our services nationally”


** The LHA are currently seeking nominations for the 2013 Leinster U-18 boys panel; here’s the notification from the LHA about who should be put forward:

“The following minimum criteria should apply to those players nominated: be of the required standard; have an excellent skill set and have excellent physical conditioning; should have played on the schools Senior A team this year or will be in the next school year; should be playing men’s club hockey at Division 3 level or above this season or likely to be playing at this level come next season; players must be under 18 by the 31st December this year.

“The following groupings will apply to nominations
Group One: Those currently training with Irish U-16 or U-18 teams that are eligible for Leinster U-18s 2013 will not be called for training until August.

“Group Two: Those who played Leinster U-18s in 2012 that are eligible for Leinster U18s 2013 will not be called for training until August

“Group Three: Players who were selected for Leinster U-16s in 2011 or 2012 and not currently involved with an Irish squad will be asked to attend one trial session before the end of this school year.

“Group Four: All other players nominated will be asked to attend an initial trial and those selected will be called back for a second trial with Group 3 players.

“Please supply the following details when nominating a player: Name; Date of Birth; Parents Email; Parents Mobile; Identify any Goalkeepers; State which Group (above) the player falls into; School &/or club

“When nominations have been received, players will be contacted with the dates of the initial trials. Closing date for nominations is Friday, May 10.
