Mount Anville and Rathdown will contest the Leinster Schoolgirl’s Senior Cup final on Tuesday as they both made it through last Wednesday’s semi-finals in Grange Road in identical fashion.
Both tied 0-0 in normal time, against Alexandra College and High School respectively, before prevailing in the penalty shoot-out.
For Mount Anville, it broke their semi-final curse of recent years as they repeated their Claudia Tierney cup win over reigning Leinster champs Alex. This tie, though, was a much tighter affair than that one with the Goatstown school thankful for the form of goalkeeper Ellen Donovan who made two crucial saves in the one-on-ones.
It laid the platform for Ailbhe Marsh, (pictured by Inpho) to score the winning goal after Jane Fennelly, Sarah Twomey and Georgina Spillane had already scored, prevailing 4-3 in the end.
For Alex, it was a frustrating end to their season after they produced some of their best hockey but could not find a way past the excellent Donovan while Millie O’Donnell impressed at the back, picking off plenty of ball to control the pace of the game.
Anna Roopnarinesingh was denied after a mazy run almost yielded a goal but for an incredible clearance off the line while both sides had late corner chances to win it but no dice until the shoot-out. Mount Anville turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead but Amber Gleeson levelled up matters to leave Marsh the final say.
Rathdown, meanwhile, are looking forward to their first ever senior final as they prevailed against High School on penalties after normal time ended blank. The final takes place on Tuesday at 2pm in Grange Road.
