Alex celebrate 120th anniversary on St Patrick’s Day

Old Alexandra Hockey Club will celebrate their 120th birthday on St Patrick’s Day with their U-16 team playing in the final of the Jacqui Potter Junior Cup against Corinthian in Grange Road.

The club, founded with a tennis club for past and present pupils of Alexandra College, pictured below, played their first game on St Patrick’s Day in 1893 against Merton Hockey Club. Initially the subscription fee was two shillings and six pence and only Alexandra College pupils were allowed to join.

The uniform consisted of grey tweed skirts, white shirts, red and white ties and red caps with white piping. It was recorded in 1894 that no member of the club was allowed to wear sailor or other hard brimmed hats. It was not until 1916 that the familiar scarlet skirts were introduced.

There were a number clubs active in Dublin in the 1890s and two of the Alexandra members, Miss Story and Miss Lyster, called a meeting in Alexandra College, then located on Earlsfort Terrace, to discuss the formation of a ladies hockey union, along the same lines as the men’s hockey union.

Six clubs, Alexandra College, Beechfield, Donnybrook, Dundrum, Howth Ladies and Merton, sent representatives to the meeting. A Mrs Strangeways of Merton Hockey Club was voted to the chair and a resolution was carried to bring the Irish Ladies Hockey Union into existence.

Alex played their hockey in Palmerstown, Milltown and hosted interprovincial, and international games in their grounds. The club showed potential winning the Irish Senior Cup in 1906 and 1907 and grew from strength to strength as other clubs folded and formed.

With some changes in uniform and club name, eventually becoming Old Alexandra Hockey Club in 1947, the golden period for the club came in the 1980s and 1990s with numerous league and trophy wins throughout the club.

The centenary was duly celebrated in 1993, pictured below, with exhibition games and this year, the club are holding a Gala Ball in the Hilton Hotel at Charlemont on April 20 to celebrate 120 years of hockey for the Milltown club.
