News in brief: O’Connor to host schools umpire event

** Ray O’Connor will host a special Umpiring at School’s Level event on February 16 from 9am to 10.30am in Mount Temple. O’Connor is currently one of the world’s top umpire managers, holding that position at the Beijing and London Olympics.

His progression to this position followed on from his umpiring days, where he took charge of two Olympic finals – Atlanta and Athens – and two World Cup finals as well as a host of other major competitions. Ray remains heavily involved in the development of young umpires both in European and World Hockey and will give a briefing for young umpires on how best to umpire schools matches and which rules are currently attracting attention.

The career path for umpires will also be outlined while the session will be an opportunity for competitive players, who also umpire, to discuss how best to engage with umpires during matches. To confirm attendance, or in case of queries, please contact the Leinster Schoolboys Hockey Committee through ffoyle@hotmail.com.
