The Leinster schoolgirl’s Senior Premier League semi-final line-up has moved within sight of a finalised bill after Mount Anville edged out Loreto, Beaufort last Saturday morning.
It was the first of a series of playoff games after those two sides and St Andrew’s finished their series of seven games level on 15 points in the pre-Christmas preliminary phases.
High School’s 3-1 win over King’s Hospital last week saw them leap-frog all three to take top spot in the pool, leading the playoff system.
The first round of those games pitted Beaufort against Mount Anville with the winner going on to play St Andrew’s for the semi-final berth.
And the Goatstown side got off to a great start as Patricia McGowan put them in front when a free in found its way to her and she netted amid a scramble.
Sophie Twomey added a second to put them in decent shape at half time but Beaufort responded in rousing fashion in the second half.
Jessica McGirr fired home one effort and they piled on the pressure, drawing numerous saves from Ellen Donovan while Jane Fennelly – the recently crowned Irish indoor tennis senior women’s open singles and doubles champion – was a rock at sweeper, putting a string of key tackles.
It sets up a second meeting of the season with Andrew’s, a tie with potential to be a thriller. The Saints won the first tie 3-2, snatching two goals in the closing minutes to swing the tie their way. The match is to be played in Booterstown on Wednesday, January 16 at 2.15pm.
High School, meanwhile, will play Muckross in the semi-finals with Wesley awaiting the winners of the playoff game. In the Senior Cup, Alexandra College showed some of their potential as they claimed a 7-1 win over Mount Temple to advance to the third round.
