Jenny Long’s postage stamp drag-flick put High School through to the Senior Premier League final last Thursday as they eventually fought off an impressive Muckross Park in a titanic tussle in Rathgar.
It finally swung the tie their way after both sides had their chances to win it in a wide open affair. Evie McCullough gave High School the lead very early on when Saoirse O’Donoghue tore down the right flank and pulled the ball back perfectly which was swept in for the go-ahead goal.
Muckross, though, started the second half in the ascendancy and eventually got back on terms when Laura Hanlon crashed home from the top of the circle.
Hanlon was subsequently brave to charge down a penalty corner effort at the far end, sustaining a broken thumb in the process. From the follow-up corner, though, Long connected with a perfect drag that was millimetres out of reach of Kate McGrath’s dive to the top corner.
McCullough’s reverse went close to sealing the tie before Ruth Shaw dramatically saw her corner effort taken off the line by Ailish Long as Muckross almost forced extra time.
It put High School through to the Premier League final where they will meet Wesley. They came out the victors 1-0 against St Andrew’s, setting up the final date on Wednesday at 2pm in Grange Road.
Elsewhere, in the Senior Cup Mount Anville picked up a strong 4-0 win over Loreto Beaufort in the second round of the cup with goals from Sara Twomey, Philippa Cotter, Vicki Walsh and Jane Fennelly.
Rathdown are also through after a local derby win over Newpark and Wesley got the better of Our Lady’s Terenure.
