UCD make statement as Hermes falter

Women’s Leinster Division One:
The return of UCD’s large international contingent served to show plenty of what they have been missing in the early weeks of the season as they blew away Hermes on Saturday 4-0.

Their corner routine was bolstered by Nicola Gray’s return and she was central to their first two goals as the opener was slapped goalward. With potential touches not occurring, it took the direct route into the goal. A similar move the next time took a touch from Jeamie Deacon around the penalty spot. Chloe Watkins dragged home the third goal and she completed the rout with a good shot from the top of the circle.

The first half was a mundane affair but the students found a good rhythm in the second period to see them earned their second win of the campaign.

Also, on Saturday, North Kildare continued their impressive start to life in division one as they recorded their second victory of the season, New Zealander Sophie Wickens on the mark in a 1-0 win over Trinity.

On Sunday, Loreto were left frustrated not to pick up all three points at Booterstown as they conceded their first goals of the season and lost their perfect record.

They got off to an ideal start as Sarah Clarke clattered home a third minute penalty corner and forged an own goal soon after. Aisling Campion’s ball forward to Ali Meeke set up the position to cross with a defender’s touch taking it into the goal.

But Hermes responded in kind, Lisa Jacob twice finding herself in behind the Loreto defence to clip home, the equalising move instigated by former Loreto player Orlagh O’Shea.

Eimear Horan added to the comeback when she jinked past a string of players from the halfway line before scoring with an excellent finish, a fine solo goal three minutes into the second half.

Emma Gray was the busier goalkeeper thereafter while Sinead McCarthy was a key performer in the centre but Lizzie Colvin levelled the tie at 3-3 when she grabbed a corner rebound. The result moves Loreto four clear of the pack but with two games extra played to Railway Union and Old Alex while Hermes are six points off the pace.

Elsewhere, Railway Union powered past Pembroke in the first round of the Jacqui Potter Cup while Loreto II and Pembroke II were also winners.
