Gerard’s pull off big Alex victory

Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League round-up

St Gerard’s made a major statement of intent as they got the better of reigning Kate Russell champions Alexandra College in the second round of Senior Schoolgirl’s Premier League games.

Leinster Under-16 player Sarah O Loughlin finished off after some good interplay to give them the lead and Claire Foley, an Irish Under-18 finished off another fine team move.

Alex pressed in search of a goal with Anna Roopseranaigh and Hannah McDermott to the fore but sturdy, solid performances from Vanessa Looby and Irish U-16. Elena Tice kept them at bay.

In the Section A standings, Mount Sackville have also gotten off to a flyer with three wins from three outings to date, running up wins over Teresians, Loreto Foxrock and St Columba’s.

Elsewhere, High School picked up four points from their opening couple of games as they beat Loreto Beaufort 2-1 in round one and drew with Holy Child, Killiney 1-1.

In the former tie, hosts Beaufort started strong, creating a number of early chances. However, after the five-minute mark High School began to settle down and gain momentum.

There was some great play down the right hand side, with U-18 international Jenny Long in the mix and it paid off with a superbly worked goal, netted by Evie McCullough. They stayed one ahead until the break, keeping out a penalty corner on the half-time whistle.

Beaufort roared back into life in the opening minutes of the second half and were soon awarded a short corner for their efforts. Irish international Jessica McGirr smashed the ball into the backboard, leaving the defence no chance to prevent it.

The game was then in full flow and some fantastic hockey was played by both teams. High School held on with cool heads and ten minutes from time managed to snatch the winner, again coming from Evie Mc Cullough. Beaufort threw every last ounce of effort at the High School defence but it just wasn’t enough on the day.

In round two, High School tied 1-1 with Killiney on a cold, wet afternoon, the inclement conditions leading to a number of basic mistakes being made. The first half ended scoreless but the Rathgar side did hit the front via Saoirse O’Donaghue.

However, Holy Child showed their physical strength and fought to keep themselves in contention. A rapid counter attack tore open the High School defence led to a deflection into the top corner and the equaliser, leaving the sides with two points each for the score draw.
