U-21 women all but secure final berth

Women’s EuroHockey Junior Championships III
Ireland 7 (Gillian Pinder 2, Naomi Carroll, Hannah Matthews, Hayley Mulcahy, Nicola Gray, AN Other) Portugal 0

A four goal burst in nine first half minutes saw Ireland cruise to a second victory and assure themselves of a final berth barring a goal difference miracle.

An 18th minute corner rebound started the run with Hannah Matthews scoring before Aine Curran got the second. Hayley Mulcahy’s hit from the top and Naomi Carroll’s reverse built further on the score for a strong half-time lead.

Gray smashed home her third of the tournament and Hayley Mulcahy finished off a counter after good work from Emily Beatty. Gillian Pinder notched the seventh 11 minutes from time to complete the scoring.

Turkey beat Azerbaijan 1-0 in the day’s other game. It means Ireland need a draw against Azerbaijan to confirm top spot from the group while they would require a 14 goal swing to deny them a place in the final.
