Local umpires receive top class appointments

Ten Leinster based umpires have been appointed to 13 international competitions this summer, ranging from Olympic level to the various youth and club competitions around the continent.

Carol Metchette has been busy at events like the London Cup, Olympic test event and at the women’s EuroHockey Club Champions Trophy in Amsterdam as she gears up for the Games proper later this month.

Geoff Conn has been appointed to the Champions Challenge while the respective Celtic Cups have proven fruitful for the province’s umpires.

In addition to officiating at the European youths championships in Bratislava later this month, Simon O’Connor was at the Junior Celtic competition in Wales recently.

Gillian Garrett whistled at the women’s equivalent while Moira Flahive (pictured) – who also took in the England A vs Ireland series – and Graham Caulwell were the Irish umpires at last weekend’s senior Celtic Cup in Lisburn.

Andrew Groves goes to Edinburgh this weekend with the Irish U-18s for their Celtic Cup series against Scotland, Wales and Switzerland.

Kris Cholewa has already been involved in Club Champions Challenge competition and will be involved in the youth nations championships in the coming weeks.

Bruce Bale, meanwhile, conducted games at two European club competitions – the Trophy and the Challenge II.
