Irish A claim English series; Celtic Cup 16 named

Following an impressive series win over England A over the weekend, Irish sights turn to the U-21s as Brendon Carolan has named a strong selection for the men’s Celtic Cup campaign in Wrexham.

Aided by the experienced John Jermyn on Saturday, an Ireland A selection ran up a 3-2 win over the English – who featured experienced internationals Richie Mantell and Mark Pearn.

Stephen Dowds scored the first that day and he was also on the mark a day later in Belfield when he nabbed a corner rebound to secure a 1-1 tie against the English.

The Banbridge man is one of six senior internationals included for the U-21 Celtic title defence, linking up with Davy Carson up front who netted his first capped goal against Spain in the 3-2 win in Santander last week.

Stu Loughrey brings experience to the defence and is a returnee along with Stephen West to this level of competition and they are likely to be joined by Philip Brown at the back.

Stephen Cole and Shane O’Donoghue are the others to have lined out at the top level. Kirk Shimmins, Owen Magee, Mark Ingram and Jeremy Duncan were all school-goers during the year gone by and are offered their chance to shine ahead of the U-21 Europeans.

They will travel with the Irish women’s side to Wrexham next weekend with the latter panel to be named later this week.
