News in brief: Metchette passes Olympic test

** Carol Metchette this week became the first Irish person to take to the Riverbank Arena, where the Olympic Games will be played, as she officiated in the test event.

She is pictured here with Stella Bartelma prior to the final played out between Great Britain and Argentina. Metchette will umpire in the Olympic Games which get underway in late July along with Colin Hutchinson.

** Skerries are running a summer camp from July 23-27 for ages 7-13 for €85. The club’s youth section – led by the hard work of Louise Montgomery – has been growing year on year after a few lean times and the club aim to attract new players and improve the standard of those already playing.

The project is being spearheaded by former underage international Brian McMahon; Johnny Tindle, who has over 15 years of coaching experience in hockey and soccer with Shelbourne Youths; and Brian Butterly – who has been coaching for five years in the club.

For more information, please contact Louise Montgomery at dutchesslou@hotmail.com.

** St Andrew’s claimed the U-12 A schoolboy’s title this season with a 2-0 victory over Delgany NS in the final. The initial rounds of the competition saw nine teams compete in two groups. Rathgar JS won out in the U-12 B final, winning on penalty strokes after normal time ended 1-1 against St Kilian’s and extra-time finished 2-2. In the mixed division, Whitechurch were 4-1 winners over Dalkey School Project. Taney, meanwhile, won the U-13 C league with a 1-0 win over St Andrew’s.
