Women’s EuroHockey Club Champions Challenge I
Hermes 4 (Eimear Horan 2, Catriona McGilp, Christine Quinlan) Rotweiss Wettingen 1 (S Schneider)
Hemes avoided potential disaster with three quick-fire corners to overcome hosts Rotweiss Wettingen and get their European campaign off to a strong start.
Despite dominating the first half, they could not convert and were stung on the counter when the Swiss side got in behind the back four and Schneider cleaned up after bullying her way through a couple of tackles.
But a sweet Eimear Horan deflection from a switch left to Christine Quinlan got Hermes back on terms.
Quinlan went the direct route next before the same slip move saw Horan grab her second and the Dublin side’s third goal. And the win was complete when Aine Connery drove in from the right and her hit into the circle was guided in by Catriona McGilp.
Hermes will be bolstered for their second game by the arrival of Audrey O’Flynn, Fiona Connery and Aoife Harte. Elsewhere in the group, Austria’s HC Wels came from 2-0 down to defeat Slavia Praha 4-2.
