Hinch hatch last quarter IHC raid

Men’s Irish Hockey Challenge final
Ballynahinch 4 (Mark Graham 2, David Ross, David Bolton) Kilkenny 0

Kilkenny tasted Irish Hockey Challenge final heartbreak for a second successive year as they were undone by four goals in the closing 15 minutes to undo what was a deceptively close tie at Belfield.

The cats looked the more dangerous throughout the first half with Ballynahinch playing on the break but no goals meant parity remained at half time.

The breakthrough came in the 55th minute with captain Mark Graham scoring his first and he made it 2-0 four minutes later to leave Kilkenny needing snookers. And the game was finished as a contest in the 64th minute when David Ross made it three and two minutes later David Bolton completed the win.

Kilkenny: Omar Mahfoud, Neil Kidd, Richie Dore, Liam Mulligan, Emmett Hughes, Stuart Bradley, Dara Chadwick, Eric Comerford (Capt), James O’Reilly, Tristan Lynas, Lee Chadwick, Evan Mathews, Adam Lynas, Danny Mulligan, Dave McClure, Sam Grace

Ballynahinch: Dave Chadwick, Alex Millar, Andrew Mulholland, Ashley Brown, Lee Thomas, Leslie Harrison, Leslie Harrison, Mark Graham (Capt), David Bolton, Andrew McIlwaine, Stuart Hunter, Gary Graham, Darren Rose, Lawrence Patterson, David Ross, Grant Hayes, Jason Campbell

    Next season says

Surely the Leinster branch will have to put Kilkenny back up into division 2 next season. 2 all Ireland finals in 2 years from a team playing in div 4.
Is their a reason why they are not going back up? As far as I can see structures are in place with Kilkenny college producing good players

What with the obsession of getting junior clubs to play in senior league ?

Look at Navan, Naas, Mullingar, Kilkenny before – these clubs just don’t have the number of players coming through each season to cope with any withdrawals or large amount of injuries to be competitive in Div 2

Let them enjoy hockey in a standard that suits them.

    Craig says

With Athy running away with the league for the past number of years are they going to make the move to DIV 2

Athy, Naas, Navan, The Gate, Mullingar & Kilkenny, Skerries – these teams should be moved to a Senior Div 3 league with winner going up to Div 2

@ Craig – right solution with North Kildare in there to make up even numbers. Then cut div 1 to 8 and Div 2 will be 8 too.

Then add Bray when and if they feel up to div 3.
