Life after the Olympic qualifiers begins for the Irish senior men’s squad this weekend as a panel of 20 go to Mannheim for three, back-to-back matches in Germany, two against the senior setup and one against an U-21 side.
The series runs from Monday to Wednesday, making for potentially busy weeks for the likes of Chris Cargo, David Ames and Ronan Gormley who are all in Rotterdam on Friday for the KO16 round of the EuroHockey League.
Ames’ Beeston meet Gormley’s Club de Campo in the competition early on Friday morning, meaning at least one will be required for the KO8 round on Sunday when the Irish side is convening in Mannheimer.
Cargo’s Reading, meanwhile, are in action in the KO16 on Saturday evening and progression against Club an der Alster would more than likely rule him out of the first game of the Irish series, the EHL quarter-final clashing directly.
The European champions’ side remains to be seen, too, with Club an der Alster, UHC Hamburg and UHC Mulheim all in EHL action over the weekend, potentially causing a squad rejig.
Shane O’Donoghue has a similarly busy weekend following his inclusion in the Leinster U-21 interpro side and will play in two rounds of the competition in Cork before travelling out to Germany.
Potential debuts lie in wait for the likes of St Andrew’s schoolboy David Cole, Banbridge’s Drew Carlisle and Cookstown keeper Ian Hughes in a much changed panel.
Jonny Bell, Jonny Bruton, Kenny Carroll, Brian Doherty, Phelie Maguire and Bruce McCandless are also brought in with ten of the OQT panel remaining.
Speaking about the series, coach Paul Revington said: “These games versus Germany offer our Squad another great opportunity to test our strength in depth and individual quality. Each player will be keen to make their own unique contribution to our Ireland team again so soon after the recent Electric Ireland FIH Road to London, Olympic Qualifiers.”
Revington and his squad will fly out on Sunday, April 8 into Frankfurt before flying home on April 11.
