News in brief: Garvey to host Celtic Cup

** Lisnagarvey will play host to the senior men’s and women’s Celtic Cup, the IHA announced yesterday, in late June and early July. Commenting on the upcoming event Director of High Performance, Dave Passmore said “Irish Hockey are delighted to be hosting this event in Ulster and at such fantastic club facilities. We know the Irish teams and visiting nations alike will get a warm welcome and great support.”

The event which takes place from Friday, June 29 to Sunday, July 1 will see Ireland, Wales and Scotland compete with the fourth country to be confirmed due to France’s withdrawal from the Celtic Cup at all age groups. The IHA are hoping to run a number of U-18 girls matches to coincide with the tournament at Lisnagarvey.

** Rory O’Donoghue has named a Leinster Under 21 men’s panel with a smattering of international talent for the upcoming interprovincials in Cork. Senior caps Richard Sykes and Shane O’Donoghue are the star names in a panel for the tournament which runs from April 7-9 in Garryduff, Cork.

Leinster men’s U-21s: Stephen West (TRR); Conor Quinn, Philip Byrne, Shane O’Donoghue, Robert Burke, Luke Chadwick, Rob Anderson, David Watkins (UCD); Richard Sykes, Stephen Cole, Frank Ryan (Monkstown); Jamie Tobin (YMCA); Simon McKeever (Fingal); Davy Carson (Corinthian); Peter English (Railway Union); Stephen Ludgate (Clontarf); Stephen Roberts, Stephen Nolan (Trinity).

** Keith Crawford and Chris Tyrell have named their panel for the women’s U-21 interpros, a side under-pinned by a quintet of UCD players as well as a quartet from Loreto. The squad is as follows: Niamh O’Connor (Genesis); Gillian Pinder (Hermes); Hannah Matthews, Ali Meeke, Sinead McGirr, Hayley Mulcahy (Loreto); Erika Hinkson (Old Alex); Sorcha Conway, Anna O’Grady (Pembroke); Orla Fox, Rachel Barnett (Railway Union); Enna Horan, Vera Taaffe (Trinity); Sarah Greene, Nicola Gray, Caroline Hill, Deirdre Duke, Niamh Atcheler (UCD).

** Armagh Hockey Club, are currently recruiting a 1st XI Squad/Development Hockey Coach to take the ladies hockey programme in the wake of Niall McCool’s decision to step down from the role after 12 years.

They are looking for a candidate who is qualified to at least IHA Level 2 or can show experience coaching at a high level or Premier League experience if possible. Applicants should have good communication skills, be motivated, ambitious, determined and have a positive attitude.

There are 4 hours pitch coaching/contact time per week plus weekend fixtures. The salary is negotiable and will depend on the candidate. The candidate will be required to be available for pre-season. Training and home games take place at Ardmore Recreation Centre.
