Schoolboy’s Junior Cup final
Wesley College 3 (Luke Madeley, Mark Samuel, Stuart Ronan) St Columba’s College 1 (Harry Morris)
Wesley’s ability to counter with speed and accuracy kept them ahead for the duration of a rather one-sided Leister Junior Schoolboys Cup final at Grange Road.
Although Leo Micklem had to be alert to bat away an early Columba’s attack, it was relatively plain sailing for Richard Rellis’ side once Luke Madeley put them ahead inside two minutes.
The livewire Jonny Dalrymple won a corner and although Madely’s drag was repelled, he followed up to reverse hard and true to the net for 1-0 – a carbon copy of his goal which won the senior league title for his school seven days previous.
He turned provider for the second goal on 14 minutes, sliding a 40-yard pass through the Columba’s rearguard for Mark Samuel to apply a deft touch to.
Wesley should have gone three up minutes later when James O’Donovan took down a Madeley aerial in the D and rounded Alexander Bisgood, but his reverse flick from a tight angle missed the unguarded goal at the far post.
The periods either side of half-time were mainly memorable for a slew of yellow cards – the majority for dissent – but Wesley continued to spurn chances to put the game to bed.
That was until Stuart Ronan took off after a long aerial into Columba’s territory and applied a simple finish. Wesley should have made it four when Bisgood was forced out to deal with another breakaway, and the ball broke kindly for Scott Dagg, but he pushed wide.
Columba’s finally got something to shout about in the dying minutes as they forced a series of corners, with Harry Morris converting a drag-flick with the third of those.
