Senior Schoolgirl’s Cup semi-finals
Wesley College will attempt to dethrone Alexandra College next Tuesday set up a Leinster Schoolgirl’s Senior Cup date yesterday afternoon at Grange Road in front of four sets of noisy fans on one of the highlight days in the school’s calendar.
It was a close-knit game with few chances but Irish senior cricket international Laura Delany almost snatched a late equaliser when she rounded the Wesley goalkeeper.
But, at full tilt, her reverse-stick shot clipped the outside of the goal in the dying moments to see the Ballinteer girls hang on. In the first half, Beaufort came closest to breaking the deadlock in a nervy game as a corner strike was taken off the line by Sarah Robinson.
Alexandra College – champions in 2011 – had a more comfortable passage in a wide open game in the second semi-final as they beat High School 6-1. The Rathgar school had held most of the early possession but the speed of youth internationals Hannah McDermott, Anna Roopnarinesingh and Emily Beatty on the break hurt them on the break.
McDermott broke the deadlock as Millie O’Donnell intercepted and fired forward for Beatty to lay on the first chance in the second minute. The striker nabbed her second six minutes later before Louise McPhillips made it 3-0 at half-time. Saoirse O’Donoghue, in between times, had gone close on a number of occasions for High School but Alex stood firm. Further goals from Erika Hinkson, O’Donnell and Alison Gibbons were only interrupted by a close range effort.
The final will take place on March 6 in Grange Road with the game tipping off at 2.30pm. Wesley and Alex have already met in the league, playing out a thrilling game which Alex won late in the day.
